How to Care for Tie Dye: Simple Washing Instructions

Custom tie dye is a labor of love — hand-dyed, one shirt at a time, right here in Portsmouth, Ohio. And the good news? With a little TLC, your Wahmpee shirt will stay as bright as the day it arrived.

Below you'll find our complete tie dye care guide: the washing instructions that keep colors vivid, plus the reasons Wahmpee pieces hold up wash after wash. Read it once, and you've got tie dye care figured out forever.

Why Wahmpee Tie Dye Stays Bright Wash After Wash

We don't use the craft-store bottle that fades after a month. Every Wahmpee shirt is dyed with professional-grade fabric dyes, formulated to bond with cotton fibers and survive years in the wash. That's why our 40+ colors across 12 classic designs look just as punchy on wash #50 as they do on wash #1.

  • Professional-grade fabric dyes that bond with cotton and resist fading
  • 100% pre-washed, pre-shrunk cotton shirts — Anvil, Fruit of the Loom, Hanes Beefy T, and Gildan — so your size stays true
  • Hand-dyed with care, then rinsed and finished ready to wear

Step-by-Step Tie Dye Washing Instructions

  1. Turn it inside out. Before the load even starts, flip your shirt inside out. This keeps the dyed side from rubbing against the drum and other clothes — the main cause of surface fading.
  2. Wash in cold water, with like colors only. Cold water is the single best thing you can do for tie dye vibrancy. If it's a brand-new item, give the first wash or two a solo run in case a little extra dye is still settling in.
  3. Use a gentle, bleach-free detergent. Skip chlorine bleach entirely, and avoid detergents with bleach or "brightening" additives. A mild, plain detergent is all your tie dye needs.
  4. Choose the gentle cycle. Use the delicate or gentle cycle with a cold rinse if you have that option. A slower, milder wash does less damage than a heavy-duty scrub.
  5. Air dry, or use low heat. Hang your shirt or lay it flat to dry, or tumble dry on low. High heat is dye's biggest enemy — it cooks color out of the fibers and speeds up shrinkage.

First Wash & Common Questions

Will my new shirt bleed on the first wash?

A brand-new dyed shirt can release a little extra dye for the first wash or two — that's normal. Wash it alone the first time (cold, gentle cycle, inside out), and after that it's happy to go in the wash with like colors.

Can I use fabric softener?

You can, but we recommend skipping it. Softener coats the fibers, and over time that coating can dull the look of bright colors. A mild detergent keeps the fabric soft enough without the film.

Will my shirt shrink or change size?

Every Wahmpee shirt is made from 100% pre-washed, pre-shrunk cotton (Anvil, Fruit of the Loom, Hanes Beefy T, and Gildan), so the size you order is the size you get. Wash cold and dry low, and it'll stay that way.

How long will the colors last?

With the washing routine above, your Wahmpee shirt will stay vibrant for years of regular wear and washing — that's what professional dyes are for.
